Over the last few years, study of attachment to confirm the histological impacts induced by some copepods and monogenean parasites of fishes are interest most of parasitologistes. With this present book, it has been satisfactory explanation as to how these parasites attach themselves sufficiently strongly in the gill chamber of their fish hosts to prevent dislodgment by the gill ventilating current. Moreover, this strong attachment of these parasites to their hosts leads to study the mode of attachment and histopathological impacts resulting from this type of attachment. ····· 10361133930

Xenoestrogen and Impact on Mammalian Reproductive System

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Studies have revealed that there are numerous toxic chemicals available in the market since World War II which can act like natural hormone and fool the body`s endocrine system. These endocrine disrupting chemicals or hormone mimics are called environmental estrogen or xenoestrogen. As many as 116 components have been identified as possible endocrine disrupting chemicals by European Commission in September 1999 out of which 50 endocrine disruptors including DDT, DDE, PCBs & even some pesticides like aldrin, dieldrin, heptachlor, kepone etc have been listed by WWF society. Environmental estrogens are ubiquitous in nature and are identified to be responsible for a number of physiological aberrations in human health as well as wildlife. A major area of concern has been in relation to the possible link between the effects of these chemicals and reported decline in sperm count along with the increasing reproductive disorders in living beings. This book particularly concentrates on industrial chemical Bisphenol-A, as a potential source of environmental estrogen. ····· 10361133700

This research was conducted from September 2007 to April 2008 on ecological aspects of the golden-rumped elephant-shrew (GRES) in selected forests along north coast of Kenya. Results show the GRES is only found within the protected Arabuko-Sokoke and Gede National Monument forests. An unrecorded species of elephant-shrew was discovered at Boni and Dodori Reserves and is undergoing tests to determine correct taxonomy. Density results indicate a 9% decrease in total GRES number while specific trends in ASF show population estimate of GRES at Cynometra forest have increased by 12% and declined at Brachystegia forest by 21% and by 50% in the mixed forest. Estimated GRES population at Gede was an estimated more than 20 individuals. An observation from the indigenous people showed lack of knowledge on endemic species within their area and this is one main factor why destruction of the forests was still a problem. Education emphasizing on importance of conservation of resources especially endemic species is therefore important targeting all age groups for conservation to be effective over many generations. ····· 10361132985

Amphibians are important to the overall ecosystem balance. The large biomass of these amphibians makes them significant prey for other animals. The pesticides are widely used and have a variety of lethal and sublethal effects on non-target wildlife species. The present studies investigate the induced effects of two selected pesticide Lambda cyhalothrin (pyrethroid) and Monocrotophos (organophosphate) against frog Rana cyanophlyctis (Common Skittering Frog). After preliminary experiments of each under test compound, two different doses i.e. 0.1 and 1% were used and cholinesterase activity was noted in liver, kidney and brain of treated frogs. It was reduced upto 34.6 and 46.3% in liver, 25.08 and 57.1% in kidney and 31.64 and 50.7% in brain under the effect of lamda cyhalothrin. While under the effect of monocrotophos, cholinesterase decreased upto 37.7 and 57.7% in liver, 57.5 and 67.5% in kidney and 47.6 and 65.9% in brain, respectively. Based on present studies it is concluded that both pesticides are reduced the cholinesterase activities. Hypoxia on rat brain and therapeutic use of superoxide dismutase

für 61.20€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
This book deals with the study on the effect of isobaric hypoxic hypoxia (10%) on rat brain. Since literatures support generation of free radicals during post ischemic/hypoxic period, here hypoxia followed by reoxygenation is dealt with as the single problem. Subsequently, as brain shows regional variations in its function and metabolic activities an attempt was made to study effect of hypoxia- reoxygenation in five brain regions ie cerebrum, cerebellum, medulla, hippocampus and hypothalamus. The changes in the activities of antioxidant defense enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase), antioxidant GSH amount and lipid peroxidation levels in brain was analyzed biochemically accompanied by histochemical analysis of brain sections to detect ultrastructural changes in brain associated with hypoxia-reoxygenation. This book also deals with the use of liposomes entrapped with superoxide dismutase to circumvent this hypoxia associated pathological changes in brain. Due to the inability of the free enzyme to cross the blood brain barrier, the liposomes were used as a carrier to smuggle past the blood brain barrier to reach the deeper brain regions. ····· 10361132831

Among the four species of bear in India, the Himalayan brown bear (Ursus arctos) is least distributed and occurs in very low densities in the alpine region of the Greater and Trans Himalayan zones in India. It is rare and usually encountered between 2800m to 4800m elevation. Population of brown bear is largely confined to the western and northwestern Himalayan regions in India and distributed mainly in the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Sikkim. Schaller (1969) stated that the Himalayan brown bear is largely confined to rolling uplands and high forests of fur-spruce and alpine pastures.Due to increasing human population, expansion of agricultural land, livestock grazing pressure and collection of medicinal plants, both brown bear and black bear populations are disturbed and threatened. Forests, pastures and wastelands have been brought under cultivation to sustain increased demand of cereals and other food products . The unsustainable land-use patterns in rural areas have further altered the landscapes. As a result of the habitat modification, certain wildlife species have become ecological dislocate. ····· 10361132759

Indian Grey Hornbill

The author studied the ecology and breeding behaviour of Indian Grey Hornbill Ocyceros birostris for two years in Nagpur city in Central India. The hornbills have a hornlike protrusion or casque over their bills. The hornbills have an interesting breeding behaviour. The female seals herself in a living tree cavity till the nestlings are grown enough to accept the food through a small cavity slit. She fledges and the cavity is resealed by the nestlings. They break it when they are ready to fly. This is the only hornbill species in India which breeds in well wooded metropolitan cities. The keystone species in the diet of hornbills were figs of Ficus religiosa and F. benghalensis making up nearly three fourth of its diet during breeding season. The hornbills indulge in various social interactions like bill grappling, aerial jousting and erratic chases in the canopy. The role of bark pieces supplied to nest inmates in nest sanitation was established by the author. ····· 10361132694

Carcass evaluation studies in indigenous Matebele goat in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe`s small ruminant population comprises 3.3 million. Approximately 97% of the goats are owned by the smallholder farmers. The majority of goats are indigenous, either of the smaller type (East African goat) found in the eastern and central areas or the larger type (Matebele goat) of the southern and western Zimbabwe Goats form an integral but rarely dominant component of smallholder farming system in Zimbabwe. Goats are the second species after cattle to provide people in the country with red meat. They are most valued primarily for meat production although by products such as blood and bone meal have a commercial value. The goat industry has a potential to contribute to urban meat supply in two ways: by proving low cost meat for poorer urban dwellers as well as meat of a defined quality and consistent standard for supermarket and chain stores. Meat production continues to be the subject of much research and carcass characteristics have been central to this effect but not much has been done on carcass evaluation in indigenous goat breeds in Zimbabwe. However more research work on goat meat quality attributes such as fatty acids profiles may be necessary in goats ····· 10361132393

Cestode Parasites of Birds

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Cestodes are endo-parasitic tapeworms which during their life cycle require at least one intermediate host and a definitive host. Many tapeworms have a two-phase life cycle with two types of host. The adult form lives in the gut of a primate. Gravid proglottids leave the body through the anus and fall onto the ground, where they are eaten with grass by grazing animals like cows that act as intermediate hosts. The larval forms or the juveniles migrate and establish as cysts in the intermediate hosts body tissues such as muscles. They cause more damage to this host than it does to its definitive host. The parasite completes its life cycle when the intermediate host passes on the parasite to the definitive host. The morphology of the cestode parasites isolated from the open air Poultry birds from different regions of Kashmir Valley has been described. ····· 10361131846
