The Role of Habitat in Crocodilian Communication

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
All crocodilians have a particular category of signals used as advertisement calls during the mating season. Each call is a combination of a few components with different physical properties, such as body postures, vocal calls, headslaps, and infrasound vibrations. These components differ in their capacity to carry information about the animal`s status and location, and their use is adapted to habitat structure. Vocal sounds are used more in fragmented aquatic habitats where they are more effective, while slaps are used more in continuous aquatic habitats. A comparison of signaling and preferred habitats by extant crocodilian species, as well as of signaling by allopatric conspecific populations inhabiting different habitats, confirms this theory. But in populations inhabiting mixed habitats, individual animals do not adjust their signal composition to habitat structure, which means that the observed differences between populations and species are evolved adaptations. In the course of the study, novel information on signaling was obtained for many crocodilians, providing insights into their ecology and evolutionary history. ····· 10361119097

Nullah Aik and Nullah Palkhu are important water resources in Sialkot and receive industrial effluents, municipal sewage that degrade the water quality and disrupt the ecological integrity. During present study, water and fish samples were collected at 18 sampling sites on seasonal basis from 2004 to 2006. Water samples were analyzed for 38 parameters. Cluster Analysis identified three different classes relatively unimpaired, impaired and less impaired regions on the basis of variations in water quality. COD, TDS, Fe, Pb, Cd, Cr and Ni were found to be higher than the permissible limits Significant variations in heavy metals accumulation were observed in organs of studied fish species. The concentration of Pb and Cr was recorded higher than permissible limits. A total of 24 fish species of 12 families were recorded. Biological Integrity index was developed for the assessment of stream health. Sites located in upstream of Nullah Aik showed higher IBI scores, which dropped to its lowest in downstream sites near Sialkot city, which gradually improve far downstream. These results can be helpful for future management of other polluted streams and small rivers in the same eco-region. ····· 10361118949

Bumblebees and utilization of food resources in northern Pakistan

für 71.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
In agricultural habitat 10 bumblebee species were recorded of which 68.62% bumblebees were dominated by five species. However, in non-agricultural habitat 13 bumblebee species were recorded and more than 50% bumblebees were dominated by four species. Significant variations were observed in the species richness of non-agricultural habitat but none in case of abundance at habitat level. However, same was true in case of non-cropped area as compared to cropped area in agricultural habitat which reflected the importance of non-cropped area as a refuge area for the development of bumblebee colonies which ultimately play a vital role in the pollination of crops, increasing their quality and quantity. Trifolium alexandrinum. Medicago sativa and Solanum tuberosum were visited by all bumblebee species in the cropped area. Forage species separated in to two conspicuous groups depending upon their utilization by bumblebees as a short and long tongued bumblebees. Long tongued bumblebees were only attracted to Ranunculus sp., Raphanus raphanistrum, Centaurea cyanus, Prunella vulgaris, Cana indica, Stachys spp., Cirsium sp., Trifolium pretense, Delphinium brunonianum and Lonicera periclymenum. ····· 10361118893

für 71.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
`It is said that earliest life originated in water but now we are facing danger of being extinct due to contaminated water`.So this book is focused on Microcystis aeruginosa and their toxic effect on fish life.Microcystis is a unicellular, colonial cyanobacterium commonly found in freshwater habitats. This algae characteristically form dense unialgal growth often referred to as a bloom or `tides`. Serious illness such as hepatoenteritis, a symptomatic pneumonia and dermatitis may result from consumption or contact with water contaminated with toxin producing cyanobacteria. Microcystis produces toxin known as `microcystin` and this toxin is responsible for human illness, bird mortality and extensive fish kills. Generally microcystin is hepatotoxic in nature. The entry of microcystin into hepatocytes of liver and other targeted tissues is accomplished by the broad specificity anion transport bile acid carriers. Extensive research has shown the impact of Microcystis extract resulted apoptosis, necrosis, pycnotic nuclei, blood depletion, hemorrhage, swelling in fish liver, gills, kidney, gonads and showed variations in biochemical, haematological and blood protein studies. ····· 10361118525

····· 10361117538

Aphids are most important group of phytophagous insects having several biological peculiarities such as prolific breeding, polyphagism, advanced degree of polymorphism, telescopic reproduction, host alternation and high potential for rapid evolutionary changes because of parthenogenesis and polyvoltinism. Some aphids are anholocyclic (parthenogenetic), while others living in colder climate are holocyclic (sexual generation alternates with parthenogenetic ones). About 20% of the described species from India are parthenogenetic virginoparous for most of the year but capable of sexual reproduction with production of eggs. The present contribution is a first consolidated account of aphid sexuales so far known from India. It incorporates detail illustrative account, morphological descriptions and morphometry of aphid sexuales with necessary keys for identification. Light has also been thrown on the holocycly of aphids occurring in Indian scenario. The book, thus, fulfils the maximum lacunae found in the earlier works on the sexual morphs of India. It is believed that the contribution, being first of its kind in India will prove a useful addition to the libraries and to the large section ····· 10361115541

Arsenic-induced reproductive and metabolic toxicity in mice:

Arsenic, a potent toxic mutagenic and xenobiotic metalloid, has been detected during the last 5 years as a major pollutant of drinking water in Bangladesh, Northern Chile, Thailand, Taiwan, China, Inner Mongolia, Mexico, Argentina, Finland, Hungary and India. Both the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry and the US Environmental Protection Agency have given the highest priority to arsenic-related toxic studies and ranked it number one on the most hazardous substances list, based on a combination of its incidence, toxicity and potential for human exposure. Survey reports revealed that the intake of arsenic-contaminated drinking water caused several reproductive disturbances in women. There is a lack of literature data related to the effect of arsenic on male reproduction, particularly at the dose levels occurring in drinking water in wide areas of India and in other countries. Therefore we have evaluated systematically and presented data in this book whether arsenic has any significant effect on reproduction and metabolism in adult male Swiss albino mice. This book also provides valuable information on protective effect of thiol compounds on arsenic-induced toxicity. ····· 10361115404
