This study envisages the estimation of floral and faunal wealth of the sacred groves in Kerala and understanding the vegetation from a holistic point of view. Based on the floristic data gathered, the status of rare, endemic, endangered or threatened taxa was ascertained. Sacred groves are small patches of native vegetation traditionally protected and managed by local communities. All sacred groves are islands of greenery in the landscape protecting biodiversity and enhancing the environmental quality and they represents hotspots of biodiversity. Due to changing socio-economic conditions as well as land use systems many sacred groves are now threatened and altered in terms of size, vegetation structure and species composition. For creating a better world we must develop a spirit of reverence and empathy for these Sacred groves. The endemics are represented in over 50 families and 94 genera. Vertebrate fauna in all the sacred groves composed of 5 species of Amphibia, 14 species of Reptiles, 49 species of Aves and 11 species of Mammals. NEUROENDOCRINE NETWORK AND IMMUNEREGULATION

für 53.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Immunity, a primeval feature of living organisms & is essential for reproduction and to face the challenges originating from seasonal variation and environmental threats as well. Present study reveals that how tropical animals have evolved a mechanism via melatonin to blaster the immune function to counteract seasonally recurrent stressors that may otherwise compromise immune functions. Finding suggests that melatonin is having an adaptive significance in balancing immune status in this rodent. It acts during winter as immuno-stimulator to save the squirrels from the adverse condition (environmental and internal high glucocorticoid level) and free radical load. The effect of melatonin is a direct one, since the receptor for melatonin (Mel 1a) was noted on lymphatic organs. Melatonin may act through/altering the other endocrine glands activity (thyroid/adrenal) in modulating the immune function according to the season. Such interdependency of melatonin-thyroxin and immune function may throw some light to the clinical problems of thyroid dysfunction and immune deficiency. ····· 10361114614

WILDLIFE CONSERVATION IN NIGERIA`S NATIONAL PARKS

für 61.20€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
This book examined the performance of uniform wildlife laws in four selected National Parks in Nigeria between 1991 and 2004. The study became necessary because some authors have argued that the rapid loss of wildlife species in protected areas are largely attributable to the gross deficiencies inherent in the wildlife laws applied without considerations of the peculiar characteristics of the host communities and ecological differences in the respective protected areas. The study, therefore, appraised the occurrence of various wildlife offences in relation to convict sentences applicable to wildlife offenders. Wildlife legislation clauses which were detrimental to wildlife conservation in the national parks were identified and discussed. The study determined if equal application of wildlife laws in the national parks have similar and effective influence irrespective of the differences in geographical locations of the parks, ecological and socio- cultural characteristics of the host communities. Factors affecting the performance of uniform wildlife laws in the national parks were identified and discussed exhaustively. ····· 10361114387

Cooperation and conflict in pied babblers

····· lezzter Preis 53.10€ ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
In cooperatively breeding species, individuals help to raise young that are not their own. However, the type of help provided and the ways that this affects offspring development and survival are manifold. In this thesis I investigate how non-breeding helpers contribute to rearing offspring in the cooperatively breeding pied babbler, a highly social, gregarious bird from the Kalahari Desert. In this species, reproduction is monopolised by the dominant breeding pair in each group. The remaining subordinate groups members do not breed and, instead, help the dominants to produce young. Subordinates help by feeding young and also by protecting them from predators. There is also evidence that adults teach offspring to associate specific vocalisations with food delivery. Since offspring respond to food calls by approaching adults, adults can use the calls to move offspring around the territory, or away from predators. I also document the conflicts of interest that are rife in systems where reproduction is inequitably shared - and describe how subordinates maximise their chances of attaining the coveted breeding position later in life. ····· 10361114344

Sex and sociality in fishes

für 61.20€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
One of the fundamental goals of behavioural ecology is to understand the evolution of animal societies how they are formed, structured and stabilized. A generalised understanding of the functioning of animal societies has clear, far-reaching consequences for our understanding of the evolutionary origins of our own societies. In order to shed light on our own behavioural characteristics, we much first conduct detailed investigations into the structure, functioning and stability of model animal systems that can be experimentally manipulated to test key theories in social behavioural evolution. This work represents a quantitative, experimental investigation into the mechanisms responsible for the evolution and maintenance of monogamy, group-living, conflict resolution and cooperation, using a social coral-reef fish as a model species. In so doing, it provides a comprehensive picture of social and reproductive behaviour of this species, and contributes to a greater understanding of the processes governing the evolution and maintenance of societies in general. ····· 10361114294

Progenitor cells and regenerative potential in echinoderms

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Regenerative processes are very common in echinoderms. Regeneration takes place through the recruitment of progenitor cells (undifferentiated or differentiated) accumulating in the lesion region. The crucial point of the `progenitor` elements involved in regenerative processes, in terms of cell recruitment, sources and fate, is a central problem, relevant for its topical interest. Crinoids such as the feather star Antedon mediterranea possess a spectacular regenerative potential. The echinoid Paracentrotus lividus possess a large amount of coelomic fluid containing several cells, many of which contribute to repair (test regeneration) and are apparently quite similar to those already characterized in A. mediterranea. As far as these experimental models are concerned the present book provide an extensive in vitro approach which represents the first attempt to culture the cells involved in echinoderm regeneration processes already described and partly characterized in vivo. Integrate and comparative analysis are addressed to identify the different cells and their involvement in processes such as migration, proliferation, differentiation and de-differentiation. ····· 10361113985

The present study investigated the prevailing condition of water quality with surface water movement in relation to the existing bridges across the Batticaloa lagoon,Sri Lanka. Kottamunai and Puthupaalam bridges and associated roads not only act as barrier to prevent the mixing of lagoon water but also they change physio chemical parameters by concentrating the pollutants in surface waters. Physio chemical biological parameters of salinity, turbidity, surface water velocity, density, temperature, dissolved oxygen, nitrite, nitrate, pH, phosphate, plankton and fish abundance were measured routinely at approximately a week interval for six months from 2nd July 2008 to 22nd December 2008 over the wet and dry seasons on either sides of Kallady, Kottamunai and Puthupaalam bridges. The existing conditions were found to have strong impact on salinity, temperature, surface velocity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, nitrite, pH and also on fish migration and plankton assemblages. The trends in these parameters were largely determined by surface water flow and lagoon geomorphology. ····· 10361113649

Amphibians watched the dinosaurs come and go, but today almost half of them are threatened with extinction. Amphibian species diversity is highest in the tropics. Hibernation is usually thought of as a resting condition in which an animal exists in a state of complete or partial torpidity. This is associated with low temperature. During this time animal`s dramatically slowing heart and breathing rates, lowering body temperature, going for long periods without eating. Biochemical and physiological parameters played very crucial role during hibernation. Each year about 13 million hectares of forests around the world are lost due to deforestation. Over a third of the world`s non-human primates are critically endangered due to deforestation, logging, hunting, agriculture and other development activities. Asia is by far the most populous region on our planet and its tropical rainforests have suffered enormously due to human impact. Scientists have recently warned that man`s closest living relatives- the world`s apes and monkeys are increasingly facing threats from humanity. According to statistics, 25% of the total 625 primate species and subspecies known to science today could soon become extinct if urgent conservation measures are not taken. Among the 22 extant species in the genus Macaca that are found in Asia and Northwestern Africa, the Formosan macaque is the least known. In this monograph, the authors based on their two decades of field research on the Formosan macaques of Mt. Longevity presents new data on ecology, social behavior, demography and conservation. The authors also highlight the urgent need to protect Taiwan`s only non-human primate species for future generations. ····· 10361102862

Photoinduction and Reproduction

für 53.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
The environmental light to which most animals are exposed has a major influence in their physiology. Over the decades attempts are being made to understand the physiological mechanism of the processing of environmental light information in the regulation of various body functions in general and reproduction in particular. Light as a source of environmental cue in the use of regulation of reproduction has also been considered for fish, the study on which has gained momentum because of its tremendous economic importance as food. Thus for obvious reasons efforts are continued to develop technologies for increasing fecundity and growth of fish in culture. As a result, photoperiodic manipulation has emerged as an effective tool of reproductive management in culture fisheries, and understanding the physiology of photoperiodic regulation of fish reproduction became the priority topic of research. Precisely, this investigative treatise embodies original findings on the identification of photoreceptor cells, demonstration of the photoreceptor molecules and their diurnal and seasonal profiles in the pineal organ in relation to the reproductive status of the free-living carp. ····· 10361102859
