Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the most important cereals in Egypt due to its vast grown area, total production and cash value. It is essential for human consumption and livestock. Moreover, it is also used for industrial purposes such as manufacturing starch and cooking oils. Many efforts are devoted nowadays to increase its productivity through genetical improvement. Therefore, increasing the productivity of such crop is the main target of corn breeders. To achieve this target more information is needed for the successful breeding programs such as the relative amount of genetic variance components and their interaction with environment for yield and its components. It is hoped that the results of such study would give such information and help in designing successful breeding programs for improving yield and its components in maize. ····· 10361442

Availability of large number of disease free genuine planting material is a major constraint in expanding area under pomegranate cultivation for which tissue culture can be explored as an alternative tool to fulfil the demand for elite planting material. In the first part of the study an efficient in vitro propagation protocol for pomegranate cv. G-137 (a superior clone of Ganesh ) has been developed. Improper hardening of in vitro raised plantlets leads to high field mortality and poor growth of plantlets which act as a hurdle in popularization of in vitro propagation in pomegranate. So, in the second part of the study four different arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) strains namely, Glomus mosseae, Acaulospora laevis, Glomus manihotis and a mixed AMF strain were used as biohardening agents to improve survival and growth of in vitro raised pomegranate plantlets. The above said AMF strains were also used in this study to enhance the performance of pomegranate hardwood cuttings in terms of high success rate and subsequently improved growth, physiological and biochemical attributes of cutting derived plants. ····· 10361403

Globally, marine fisheries resources as a source of food and income are under the threat of over-utilization. Sustainable development of these resources to satisfy needs of the present and future generations is an absolute necessity. Achieving sustainable development is a major challenge, especially among developing fishing nations which depend more on fisheries resources. In Namibia, a developing fishing nation, many fisheries resources were over-utilized pre-independence. Thus, measures implemented post-independence were aimed at sustainable development of fisheries resources. Sustainability analysis of the Namibian marine fishing sub-sector has never been done before. Hence, this book gives a sustainability analysis of the Namibian marine fishing sub-sector using a total of seven indicators covering all aspects of sustainable development such as ecological, socio-economic, and technological. Key features of this book: Sustainability analysis of the sub-sector using indicators. Development trends construction and interpretation of the sub-sector. The book can be useful to students, researchers, fisheries managers and anyone interested in the field of sustainable development. ····· 10361396

Selectivity and fish catches of gillnets

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Gillnet fishing in Stratum VII of Lake Volta reveals the dangers involved in the use of inappropriate gillnet over a period of time. The gear is used both in the inland and marine fisheries. Gillnet fishing is therefore found to be the commonest method in fishing worldwide. The use of gillnets ought to be monitored and regulated in order not to promote `growth` or `recruitment` overfishing among others. With the declining nature of fish catches which are controversial to explain in Lake Volta, fishermen deploy all sorts of illegal gillnets to increase their fishing output. This however, can have both negative and postive effects on the fishery. This work seeks to explore the changes regarding fish species, composition by number and weight, and gillnet selection parameters. It also explores an approach to addressing immediate and future problems of the fishery. ····· 10361381

It was a field and lab based research. During this research, 16 genotypes of brinjal collected from different parts of Bangladesh. In the field level, these genotypes were cultivated and coefficient of variation and correlation coefficient were determined. The phenotypic coefficient of variation was higher than genotypic coefficient of variation in most characters.Correlation coefficient was determined to find out the interrelationship among the different characters. Fruit yield per plant was positively and significantly correlated with plant height, number of branches per plant, number of fruits per plant, number of inflorescence per plant, fruit breadth and individual fruit weight. On the other hand negative correlation was observed with flowering time and fruit length. In the laboratory research, leaf sample of the genotypes was used for isozyme analysis. The electrophoresis of the proteins of leaves was carried out using Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (PAGE) technique and the gels were stained with Peroxidase (POD), Glutamate Oxaloacetate Transaminase (GOT) and Malate Dehydrogenase (MDH) isozyme and zymogram analysis was performed. ····· 10361364

Pesticide Residues in fruits and vegetables

····· lezzter Preis 44.10€ ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
The use of pesticides is one of the essential measures of modern agricultural practices in order to protect the crops from different pests. However the residues resulting from the indiscriminate use of pesticides on vegetables and fruits is a major concern in many countries including Pakistan. Moreover, the hazards to health can be minimized to a great extent if these residues are kept below their prescribed safe level (Maximum residue limit i.e. MRL). A field survey was conducted in the major growing areas of fruits and vegetables regarding the use of pesticides by local growers on their farms. In view of an indiscriminate use of pesticides, continuous monitoring for pesticide residues is needed in food crops especially fruits and vegetables in order to protect the grower s interest and consumer health. Fruit and vegetable growers should be properly educated through mass media and training workshops to create awareness about the issue of pesticide residues. ····· 10361363

Phosphorus In Broilers

für 61.20€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Phosphorus (P) is an indispensable mineral for poultry, and a failure to supply satisfactory amount of this nutrient in bird s diet, leads to serious economic losses. Therefore, poultry nutritionists propose reasonable safety margin for this mineral in bird s feed. Limited resources of phosphate have been discovered and mined consistently. And ultimately, future generations will face problems in obtaining enough P to exist. Being the third most costly dietary constituent, one of the main pollutants in bird s excreta, P deserves exceptional concern in feed formulation to meet specific requirements of poultry. This book, therefore, presents basics and applications, by which, broiler feed formulators can exploit adaptation potential of modern broiler strains to cope with modest deficiency of nutrients and especially P. In addition, it would be valuable for broiler producers to lessen feed expenses, as well as, to minimize P release in surrounding environment devoid of any unfavorable effects on birds. ····· 10361352

Organochlorine level was found to be high in those persons who were employees in government chemical department as compared to others private department. The variation was also noted among their ages. Both young and old age people were found to contain considerable quantities of organochlorine pollutants. Regarding blood parameters all donors had significant variation (i.e., increase or decrease level) possibly due to cumulative effect of residues. In 40% of the samples Hb, Hct, RBC, neutrophils and eosinophils had decreased level which may be due to toxic effects of pesticides. ····· 10361343

Rock Phosphate Enriched Compost:

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Phosphorus plays an important role in a number of processes in plants, especially in photosynthesis, carbon metabolism, membrane formation, energy generation, glycolysis, respiration and nitrogen fixation. Although total P in the soils are high but their availability to plants is too low to meet the requirements so viable strategies are needed to solublized the inorganic P and to use the RP (insoluble source of P) to decrease the dependence on costly chemical fertilizers in crop production . For the transformation of insoluble phosphorus (PR) to soluble form, composting technology would serve as breakthrough and provided optimal conditions. The objective of the study was to optimize the compost: RP ratio, time and temperature conditions for maximum solublization of P by composting. This study was undertaken to evaluate the potential of composting technology to solublize the rock phosphate in soil and also to develop optimum conditions for better release of available P for growth and development of crop plants. ····· 10361326

Livestock in the rice-based economy of Office of Niger

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Aim of the diagnostic study was to gain insight in the development potential of livestock for the rice-based economy of Office du Niger (ON) in Mali. Via surveys, interviews and farmer group discussions, we studied the functioning of various farming systems and value chains. Findings show that in ON rice is the prime agricultural activity: though half of the farm households own cattle (for capital insurance and draught power), livestock management is troublesome due to a lack of grazing land and water points etc. Rice production is lucrative, but half of the farmers do not have the land and/or capital to attain a good production and sell a profitable price. The ON supports rice farming via the provision of infrastructure and subsidies but the hierarchical structure and limited human resources hinder the timely availability and quality of these services. More affluent farmers do cope, but poorer farmers have problems to make ends meet. Diversification towards intensive livestock production seems a possible way out. ····· 10361309

Two Jatropha curcas L. genotypes, namely Zimbabwe (exotic) and Varattupallam (indigenous), were taken up for study under field condition for their responses to three foliar sprays of nine growth regulators and nutrients during vegetative, flowering and fruiting stages. Zimbabwe performed outstandingly well with robust growth, equipped with favorable levels of biochemical and physiological characters Both gibberellic acid and brassinolide treatment enhanced plant height, number of branches, leaf number and leaf area. The rates of chlorophyll fluorescence, photosynthesis, transpiration and stomatal conductance were high under these treatments. By these favourable effects, gibberellic acid and brassinolide treatments produced more number of inflorescences and pods per plant, with better fertility coefficient. These two treatments produced higher pod and seed yields among the foliar spray treatments. Plant height, leaf number and area, chlorophyll content, soluble protein content, nitrate reductase activity, stomatal conductance and transpiration, number of inflorescences, pod yield and number of pods per plant are dominant traits which influence final seed yield in jatropha. ····· 10361276

Factors Influencing Fast-food Consumption in Kampala, Uganda

Consumption of fast-foods in Uganda is becoming an increasingly important component of the food market as the working class choose to dine out rather than prepare meals at home. Descriptive statistics show that chips, chicken, sausages, meat and `chaps` are the most consumed fast-foods. Consumption of these foods are motivated by their tasty and convenient nature. Results from the Heckman model show that age, household size, education level and distance from work-place to restaurant negatively influenced the probability and level of fast-food consummption while disposable monthly income and time spent away from home had positive effects on the probability and expenditure level of fast-foods. Developing countries like Uganda are increasingly adopting the lifestyle of developed countries and this has led to a high demand for fast-foods by the middle class in urban centres like Kampala. This can be exploited by multinational fast-food restaurants to open branches in urban centres like Kampala. ····· 10361265

White pea bean was the dominant bean types that Ethiopia exported over years. Europe was the major (76 %) and traditional consumer. The producer share from haricot bean export price was estimated to be about 56 percent. Ethiopia s export growth was attached only with market effect. The sensitivity of market share to price ratio in the long run. The poor haricot bean export performance, sensitivity of market share to change in unit value ratio, and the likely increasing world competition due to increasing demand implied that, Ethiopia has to increase its competitiveness in haricot bean trade by improving the bargains power, improving production and quality, improving the seed system, promoting the organicness of the product, and improving the marketing skills of producers and exporters, among others. Moreover The benefit of small farmers could be realized through linking small farmers to export market. That is, competitive advantage is a means to get front and shady chair of market champion. As food prices soar and the effects of climate change and environmental degradation become increasingly apparent there is a growing awareness that the ways in which we, in the United Kingdom, source our food are unsustainable. The search for viable alternatives to conventional methods of food appropriation is becoming ever-more urgent. This dissertation examines the factors involved in the current UK food system and the relationships between these factors. The dynamics of these relationships are assessed as are their contributions to the current problems which exist both within the UK and externally. It is proposed that food systems and the relationships which underline them are highly influential upon the character and development of society and should therefore have a key role in the strive for environmental sustainability. This essay offers recommendations of potential methods which could be employed not only to decrease the negative environmental impacts of the British food system, but to enhance community relations, standards of living and social equity. ····· 10361193

Since the 1950s, migration to the isolated valley of Sumberjaya in Sumatra s mountains triggered waves of deforestation and conversion to coffee gardens, resulting in violent conflicts with governmental army forces. Currently, negotiation among all stakeholders aims at mutually beneficial solutions for these land use disputes. But how do farmers perceive the consequences of deforestation and the disintegration of the watershed functions in their area Through in-depth interviews and questionnaires, systematised knowledge base of farmer knowledge on water and soil functions has been constructed. The collected knowledge has been compared to both scientific knowledge and knowledge of other stakeholders in the area. The findings of the research are that local farmers display a profound and detailed understanding of soil and water functions. Their local ecological knowledge is found consistent with and comparable to scientific hypotheses. However, farmers clearly lack the incentives to implement their rich knowledge in practice. Reasons might be the harsh socio-economic conditions, the land tenure uncertainty and the difficulties of collective action to protect common resources. ····· 10361162

Pressure on the land resources will increase significantly in the next few decades while the land available for food supply will continue to decline in per capita terms. The food, fodder and fuel production in developing countries will have to be increased by 60% in the next 25 years to meet the needs of growing population. Thus, efforts be made to increase productivity of agricultural land by advocating agroforestry as one of the most practical way of meeting the needs. Agroforestry systems are often claimed to be superior to agricultural systems because of their ability to contribute to sustained production of crops and also play a promising role for environmental consideration. Fruit tree based agroforestry involves intentional and simultaneous association of annual or perennial crops with perennial fruit-producing trees on the same land unit. The relatively short juvenile (pre-production) phase of fruit trees, high market value of products and the contribution of fruits to household dietary needs, fruit-tree-based agroforestry enjoys high popularity among producers worldwide. ····· 10361159

Prebiotic galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS), which are non-digestible carbohydrates and are produced by transgalactosylation of lactose catalyzed by galactosidase, have been found to modulate the colonic micro flora by stimulating the growth of probiotics and suppressing adverse microbial activities and have received much attention in last few years. The prebiotic efficacy of GOS is largely dependent on glycosidic linkages among monosaccharides and GOS mixtures typically result in better growth of that strain that had served as galactosidase source. In the present book, galactosidases from different lactobacilli and other sources have been characterized in detail for various biochemical properties and their transgalactosylation abilities have been evaluated. To overcome the problem of less activity, genes of galactosidases were cloned and expressed in different expression systems. The mixtures of GOS were characterized using different analytical techniques including HPLC and capillary electrophoresis. ····· 10361118

Vegetable are considered Protective supplementary food as they contain large quantities of minerals, vitamins and essential amino acids. The practical application of IPM in vegetable cultivation is generally still limited, although simple packages do exists for some key pests. Several insect pests and their natural enemies exist in the vegetable cropping system. The delicate balance between these two groups is disrupted largely due to injudicious use of insecticides Presently the management of these pests relies solely on the use of synthetic insecticides. But injudicious use of these insecticides has resulted in the development of resistance problem and environment pollution therefore, because of unique properties of specifically, safety and biodegradation microbial insecticides are an attractive alternative to chemical insecticides in insect pest management system. Moreover, the development of resistance to chemical insecticides and concern over the deleterious effects of chemicals on environmental and human safety have provided a strong impetus for the development of microbial control agents for use in integrated controls of these insect pests. ····· 1036180
